The communue of Manchuela is located in the foothills of mountains in the far east of Castilla La Mancha. Moderate summer days and cold autumn nights courtesy of the region’s high altitude result in elegant wines with intensely flavours and nicely balanced structure and tannin.
Altacena was created by Riojan winemaker Javier Murua as an authentic expression of modern Spanish Tempranillo, nicely balancing varietal structure and red berried flavours with an approachable character and versatility with food. Altacena is a local colloquial word and the name of the original vineyard the wines was sourced from. It translate as “High Plate” and refers to the very flat, high altitude plain on which the vineyard is located.
The palate is supple and opulently fruited with a core of ripe red berried fruit, cherry cola and subtle oak, all framed by fine savoury tannins. The wine nicely balances drinkability and quality with excellent depth of fruit balanced by a defined structure and impressive length.
