John Duval The Eligo Shiraz 2019
This is the best priced luxury Aussie on the market!!
From the gentleman who crafted Grange for many years.
John's aim with Eligo is to produce a structured but elegant expression of Barossa Shiraz. A wine with restrained power, rich texture and palate length. Eligo is a vineyard selection of the best, low yielding parcels of exceptional fruit that I find during the vintage.
Just take a look at the below reviews...
96 pts “The 2019 vintage was the first in two consecutive drought years in the Barossa, and the wines are unsurprisingly concentrated and brooding. In this 2019 Eligo Shiraz, we see lashings of exotic spice, aniseed, licorice and resinous char contained within a framework of fine, silty tannins. This is a big wine, make no mistake, but eminently balanced.” Erin Larkin Robert Parker Wine Advocate September 2022
95 pts “In 2019, John Duval’s subregional shiraz blend saw the Barossa Valley just nudge out the Eden Valley, 53/47% respectively. The Eligo has always been a study of concentration of fruit and detail and nothing has changed with this release. Powerful blackberry and plum fruits, graphite-cored and studded with spice, earth and dark chocolate. Substantial granitic tannin plunges through the heady fruit providing ample support and the finish trails off admirably.” Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, August 2022
95 pts “Tremendously concentrated colour, deep, dark and brooding, and it stains the glass. Black pepper, iodine and spice aromas. The wine is very full bodied, massively structured and powerful, the tannins grippy but balanced. It’s a wine that begs to be cellared and will surely repay long keeping. A whopper, but it doesn’t overplay its hand. Oak and extraction have been superbly handled.” Huon Hooke, The Real Review May 2022
