Beronia Reserva Rioja 2017

Modern but still authentic.  It's got to be one of the best priced Rioja's about!

Our house premium Spanish red.  Just offers so much for the money. Not too modern and not to old.

All of 93% of the blend comes from their oldest Tempranillo vines, with a small addition of 6% Graciano and 1% Mazuelo. The grapes were picked at the beginning of October and went through a short period of cold maceration before being fermented with periodic pumpovers. The wine spent 18 months in Beronia's unique 'Frenmerican' oak barrels that are custom-made with American oak staves and French oak ends. They believe that this unusual hybrid barrel format gives their riojas a unique Beronia signature. The wine was bottled in October 2020 and, as per Rioja Reserva regulations, the wine spent 18 months in bottle before being released to the market. Wine of the week - Jancis

A lovely classic bouquet with aromas of dark red fruits, a bourbon barrel vanilla richness, wood smoke and dark baking spices. Equally powerful on the palate with flavours of raspberry and red berries, currants and toasty wood and vanilla spice layers. Firmish tannins and acidity bring contrast and mouth as well as complexity and Rioja charm. Excellent drinking from 2022 through 2029. Cameron Douglas 94/100
