An exciting label from Esk with an exciting new vintage. Tremendous value here.
Fruit from the Bay View and Maraekakaho sub-regions were fermented in French oak barriques with 50% then undergoing malolactic fermentation. Under Gordon's skillful hand these powerhouse winemaking techniques have been used with restraint, and the result is elegant and refined chardonnay with a lovely seam of fresh minerality that runs through the palate. While this wine is understated by traditional barrel-fermented standards, it is definitely not underwhelming. As the wine builds in the mouth, a full-bodied chardonnay with creamy mouthfeel is revealed, with classic flavours in the citrus / stonefruit spectrum.
"Ripe, youthful, familiar. Aromas of vanilla and nut, stone fruits and ripe red apples. Moderate oak scents with a mild toasty quality and youthful complexity and charm. On the palate a generous satin textured wine with contrasting acidity then flavours that mirror the baking and toasty wood qualities. Decent length and finish a wine for enjoyment on its own or with food. Best from 2023 through 2026." 91/100 Cameron Douglas MS, January 2023 (2022 Vintage)
