New vintage but the same old premium Shiraz without the premium price.
Three Dark Horses is the project for former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. When the opportunity arose in 2009 to make wine from Bruno Romano’s old vineyard in the Seaview sub region of McLaren Vale- Matt teamed up with his father Alan and grandfather Frank and the Three Dark Horses were born. Today Matt and Alan run this small label with Matt’s 89-year-old grandfather Frank a vintage regular. Their focus is on producing small batch, hand made, and affordable wines of character. All of the work is done in our small facility 10 minutes north of McLaren Vale. The range consists of a Grenache Rose, a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Touriga Nacional, a single vineyard old vine Grenache and a single vineyard Shiraz.
From a single block on the old Romano Vineyard this is McLaren Vale Shiraz at its best. It opens with briary fruits, subtle spice and musk, then draws you in with dark berry flavours and firm yet elegant tannins.
Varietal aromas of dark berries and vanilla, with musk, spice and chocolate playing a supporting role. Flavours of plum, blackberry conserve and coco powder. Some spice and a touch of earth. Soft and plush in the middle, with gentle but persistent tannin giving a long finish. The quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz. Winery
"Superbly fruited and perfumed showing blackberry, sweet plum, floral, clove and cedar notes, leading to a concentrated palate that's filled with delicious fruit intensity backed by velvety tannins. Opulent and sumptuous with plush mouthfeel while offering firm structure and persistency" 5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim
